Day 9: Someone you didn’t want to let go, but just drifted.
I’m noticing lately that I have a lot of friends who just drifted. I think that’s a natural thing when you go away to college for your high school friends to drift a bit, and then when you graduate from college for your college friends to drift a bit too. I have one particular friend who drifted after high school who I didn’t always see drifting.
We were best friends in elementary school starting in third grade. We were in the same class and we became fast friends. She had just moved a year before to my small hometown and was going through a hard time. We just clicked. We both loved to read, we were in all the same classes, and we got along great! Things were wonderful until we hit the dreaded middle school. She got a new best friend, I got kicked off the lunch table (yes that happens) and I had to get all new friends.
Then in high school, we reconnected (she got dumped by the new best friend) and things went great until senior year. She forgot my birthday (actually, all my friends forgot my 18th birthday) and we had a huge falling out because I was sick of being the friend that makes all the effort. We reconnected once again over the summer in a summer study abroad program. We had a heart to heart and apologized for all the crap she put me through. We drifted when we went our separate ways in college, but I always thought we’d find our way back to each other.
Her parents just moved away (we grew up on the same street) and I haven’t seen her in about four years or so. It’s been that long since I’ve probably talked to her too. I didn’t mean to let her drift, but it just happened. A part of life I suppose. Who knows, there’s still time to come back to each other again!
